ORDER EDITION #001 CLOUD CUCKOO LAND -
On October 14th, 2023, we introduced our first HouseGuest Josephina van de Water. We presented her first solo exhibition, ‘Cloud Cuckoo Land,’ and first book bearing the same name.
Josephina van de Water (b. 1985, Netherlands) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Antwerp, Belgium. In 2020, she obtained an MA degree in photography at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp. Her artistic approach is based on meticulous research, which focuses on investigating indefinable sociological and political problems, visualizing the hidden structures of power and authority. She uses a variety of media in her multidisciplinary projects, including photography, video, writing, and paper sculptures.
Cloud Cuckoo Land is a collection of paper sculptures, artworks, four short hand-coloured films, and an art book. With her animals, Josephina wants to remind us of our first and most fundamental right, freedom of thought, that we seemingly give away foolishly to our own cloud.
Cloud Cuckoo Land is a boundless imaginary realm between heaven and earth where a colourful company of animals lives who love to brag about their powers and want to transcend the laws of society. These megalomanic animals and their pompous doggerels want to disintegrate free thought of our minds and make you wonder what the definition of freedom of thought will be in the twenty-first century.
